It has been a while since I have really blogged our journey with biomed. Launching my own business, Real Food Mum, has been exhilarating and has taken a lot of my writing time as our client schedule and content creation have taken priority.

At the end of May, beginning of June, we were referred to the Orthodontist for a consultation. At that time, he was less worried about the reason for our original referral which was jaw formation. Instead, he was focused on an issue uncovered by their 3D xray. My son's canines had not fallen out like the regular dentist thought. The adult teeth were coming in and the baby teeth showed no signs of the root dissolving anytime soon. His recommendation was to schedule extractions by the end of summer. Yikes!

That would mean anesthesia. My son's detoxification pathways have opened so nicely partly due to all of the biomed we've done, methylation support and certainly the use of the IonCleanse footbath detox system. But still, the last thing I would willingly do is have to put him through the exposure as well as the pain of extraction. Certainly to avoid larger problems down the road, I would do what I need to do. But, I figured I had a few months to tackle this myself.

I did some research on local practitioners and went to see Dr. Rich Petke who had been treating my friend's whole family for years. He was fabulous and sadly, getting ready to move to Washington State. We maximized our time left with him here and we did homeopathy and craniosacral. I can't even really go into what happened during my son's craniosacral treatments. I believe he released some birth trauma even. If you haven't looked into it, I highly recommend you do.

As we started to implement homeopathy, a modality I am very familiar with, it managed to astound me yet again. After the first dose my son reported a loose tooth. Seriously. He had no teeth loose at the time, none. We had just had a dental checkup and that was what necessitated the orthodontia referral. His teeth had been thoroughly checked very recently. The boy has lost a tooth a month since (the total is 5 for those keeping score at home!) We dosed about twice a week, sometimes less. If there had been much time between the previous dose due to a vacation or forgetfulness, almost inevitably I would hear "Mom, I have another loose tooth" immediately following a dose. But, none were those canines!

We just went back to the dentist for another cleaning and checkup. I had given him a dose of his remedy and he told me another tooth felt loose. At the dentist, I asked them to confirm which tooth was loose, it was his canine!! At dinner tonight he lost his first canine tooth! I know, not the best photo but you can see the gap there. Can you see his smile in this picture? Chalk up another win for homeopathy, this time saving us from 2 teeth needing to be extracted.Terri Burges Hirninghttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16131214762232111105noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-515138895847197893.post-90138033383061150322016-08-19T11:04:00.003-07:002016-08-19T11:04:30.826-07:00Real Food Mum hosts Moms Across America in Flagstaff!

I am thrilled to announce that earlier this year my partner and I launched a company called Real Food Mum! What is Real Food Mum? We provide support, recipes, private and group consultations, pantry clean outs and other services to support families looking to transition to a real food diet.

Eating healthy can be easy and affordable, believe me, I do it!

The journey recovering my son from autism has changed me profoundly. Without it, I would not be the person I am today nor would I have the tools to support other families (with or without autism) in eating as close to nature as possible.

My passion is helping others change their lives through diet and nutrition. And, my partner and I can show you how to do so on a budget, with a busy schedule and juggling a family. We have you covered! Join us in our next group program, programs start each month, or book a private consultation to go over your goals and make changes in your diet.
the underlying biomedical issues related to autism. As a parent, you
have many things to consider when evaluating lab testing, including
cost, method of testing (whether it is blood, urine, hair, or saliva),
usefulness, and the possible benefits of it. Understanding these aspects
of testing is important for parents to make informed decisions about
whether to test and what to test. Terri will walk you through some of
the major things that contribute to a parent's use and understanding of
diagnostic testing, including how to help educate care providers on your
team about testing.

If you want to learn more about lab testing from a parent's perspective, please tune in for my FREE webinar I am doing for The Great Plains Laboratory on December 16th. To register, click here.Terri Burges Hirninghttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16131214762232111105noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-515138895847197893.post-81695689487515006152015-11-04T17:58:00.003-07:002015-11-04T17:58:40.500-07:00Mind your microbiome - gut bacteria after illnessAfter a lovely bout of stomach flu raced its way through our house, I started noticing some of those tell tale signs of clostridia in my son. Short fuse, no patience, high frustration level, elevated anger response, yes something was going on. We sent in Organic Acids Test (OAT) and the brand new GPL-TOX tests for us all. More on the TOX test in a later blog.

Well, the results were as expected, elevated HPHPA, a sign of clostridia. Luckily we know what to do and are on that path but I started to wonder, what had happened? We had a good year and a half since we had any clostridia / yeast flares. And then it dawned on me, the stomach flu. Nothing disrupts the microbiome quite like that little gem. And while we started immediately back on probiotics, the damage had been done. Had I not done testing, I would not have known our current probiotic regime was woefully inadequate and needed bumping. Yes, the behavior symptoms told me something was going on but my lab test really validated that and drove my treatment protocol. This is a great reminder that lab testing is not a "one and done" thing. If you don't test periodically, how do you really know what is going on?

And speaking of testing, I will be doing a webinar for The Great Plains Laboratory on lab testing from a parent's perspective December 16th. I will post a link to register (it will be FREE) and feel free to post questions or message me if you have things you would like to see covered. Parents are in a unique position to really use lab testing to make changes that can be impactful for their child's, and their own, health. But, lab testing can be confusing and I would like to help make it less so.

So, again, remember that illness can severely disrupt the microbiome and often after an illness can be a good time to retest, especially something like an OAT when you want to get a good assessment of gut function.Terri Burges Hirninghttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16131214762232111105noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-515138895847197893.post-48351355199672769602015-10-31T21:39:00.004-07:002015-10-31T21:39:54.159-07:00Vitamin C Moisturizer ReviewI know my blog readers tend to want to know about good products that are organic and toxin free. I had the opportunity to review Vitamin C Moisturizer from Made From
Earth. I was looking forward to this because it is all organic and made
without the toxic ingredients that we tried and avoid. It is important
for me and my family to use organic and non toxic product where
possible. This moisturizer is organic and filled with high quality oils
and ingredients designed to nourish skin. I tried it and enjoyed the
light, smooth feeling. It was pleasant smelling despite having no
artificial fragrances. It made my skin feel supple and smooth. I look
forward to seeing how my skin responds to repeated use. Their website

Are you a parent of a child with autism and you want to learn about biomedical interventions that have been helpful for many children? Do you want to flatten out your learning curve? If you are motivated to get a fast-tracked approach to learning the ins and outs of biomed then this course is for you!

My son has been a patient of Dr. Woeller's since shortly after his diagnosis at 4 years old. My son is 12 and considered recovered from autism and Dr. Woeller was our guide on this journey. His experience, insight, willingness to work with parents as a team, and his drive to keep learning the latest research and treatment options. His next Autism Mastery Course is launching soon. Don't miss out. And if you know of a practitioner wanting to learn more about the treatment of autism, this would be perfect for them as well.

When
Dr. Woeller launched his Autism Mastery Course last summer, it was a
huge success, and many people have been asking when it will be available
again. The next course start date is November 9, 2015.

The Integrative Medicine Academy’s Autism Mastery Course for
physicians and other health care practitioners is an extremely
comprehensive course, designed for practitioners and parents who really
want to know the science and protocols of treating autism using
integrative and functional medicine.

Dr.
Kurt Woeller, renowned autism treatment specialist, incorporates his
17+ years of clinical practice into a program that could be understood
and implemented in a reasonable time frame. The course itself is timely,
as autism rates are growing each year, and there simply aren’t enough
knowledgable health practitioners to help!

This
online course features clinically relevant, practical, and time
efficient material for any health practitioner currently working with
the special needs community or for those who want to gain knowledge
about how to help this underserved population of people.

To
help families struggling with the complexities of autism, Dr. Woeller
has created an online, 16 week course that will provide a depth of
knowledge regarding biomedical intervention for autism-spectrum
disorders that would normally take years of training and practice to
obtain. This course will flatten out the learning curve for you to be
able to understand and treat autism.

While
Autism Mastery was created with the health care practitioner in mind,
we know that “autism parents” are some of the most educated and studious
people out there, so we will have spots available for dedicated parents
as well.

This
course is for anyone looking to implement biomedical intervention into
their practices (or homes) and take their knowledge of integrative
health concepts to a deeper level in helping these children. We need
more educated and knowledgable parents and health practitioners helping
kids - no matter where they are in the world.

I had the opportunity to try Organic Matcha from Enzo. It was delicious! The smooth consistency of the powder mixed well in warm water. I had a much more concentrated drink than I would with just a tea bag. I also added it to my smoothies. I love the antioxidant properties in green tea and this provides that with ease. I also liked the taste and texture of Enzo Organic Matcha. If you are looking for an easy to use, pleasant tasting matcha powder, I would recommend Enzo!

For my son's 12th birthday, he wanted a Percy Jackson / Greek God themed party. He LOVES Greek Mythology, I mean loves it. There wasn't a lot out there, a couple of things on Pinterest so I had to wing it a little.

First up was a chalkboard drawing for his birthday. One of the things his previous teacher did was a chalkboard drawing for his birthday. He loved that so I wanted to continue that in our Waldorf Homeschool. I worked off of the picture of Zeus in one of our Greek Mythology books. I am still very much working on my artistic skills (did I mention we are NEW to Waldorf homeschooling??) so be gentle.

Since Percy Jackson's favorite color is blue, his mom gives him a blue birthday party so that was pretty easy. Blue streamers, blue balloons, I found some gold star balloons which fit well. We cut out large yellow thunderbolts out of posterboard and smaller ones using my Cricut for the cupcakes. I also found these cute ceremonial cups at the Dollar Store that looked Greek to use on top of some cupcakes.
This was about as low key as it gets. He was super excited about his birthday last night before bed and the whole day he was just enjoying his special day. It was great to watch given years past my husband and I felt like we celebrated his birthday for him because he didn't seem to understand what we were celebrating! He's come a long way baby! This year he kept telling me how excited he was and before bed last night told me how much he loved me and how I was the best mom ever. Buttering mom up always helps. ;)Terri Burges Hirninghttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16131214762232111105noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-515138895847197893.post-84846659125727163972015-09-09T19:53:00.003-07:002015-09-09T19:53:24.667-07:00Harry Potter Birthday PartyWow, it is only in having my son's birthday party in September that I am realizing I never posted about my daughter's birthday party in January. Yeah, to say we've been busy around here is a huge understatement! Both of my children have gotten to the point where this year they are choosing just to have a family party. But, that doesn't mean we don't decorate and have FUN! So, for anyone else wanting to do a Harry Potter themed birthday party, I hope these ideas can be of use!
Such a loaded term, I am not exactly sure why. Would you say "What do you mean you are treating your child's diabetes with insulin, can't you just ACCEPT them as they are?" That is how I feel about the disorder called autism. I never presume to know anything about anyone else's child and their medical history unless I am looking at their lab results or speaking with a knowledgeable caregiver about their health history. But, I know my own child's story quite well. I have volumes of files, psychological evals, school evals, laboratory tests, supplement logs, etc. It is another full time job staying on top of what he needs to keep improving his health.

Low and behold, as I treated some of these underlying MEDICAL issues, the behaviors we associate with autism began to lessen. ATEC and ADOS scores began to fall. IEP's were no longer filled with talk of autism, as a matter of fact his school records note specific learning disability in certain areas now, not autism. Some may debate that because our diet is still not your "Standard American Diet" (which it will never be again regardless of my son's health status) that he is not "recovered". Some say because we still give him supplements that he is not "recovered". I couldn't care less what anyone's definition of recovery is as long as my child is happy, healthy, thriving and able to navigate this world with less roadblocks. That is how I see my son's diagnosis of autism. He is not autistic, autism is not who he is. Clearly not if he can make so many changes in a relatively short period of time. I know this is touchy and why we need two "camps" is beyond me. I can still love and accept my child despite wanting to optimize his health the best I can. And if that succeeds in a reduction of behaviors that result in a diagnosis of autism, why not?!?

I got to sit up on stage at the recent Autism One conference in Chicago beside my Thinking Moms Revolution sisters. I am a member of TEAM TMR, the non profit side of The Thinking Moms Revolution. My son's story was in the 2nd book. I was told that we were the first panel dedicated to autism recovery. Times are changing. Parents are sharing what is working to heal their children. We are the revolution. No longer will we sit and watch more and more children be diagnosed with autism without providing some measure of hope.

On this panel we shared our stories and took questions from the audience. There were some similar stories but each child is unique and so our stories also varied. I was so proud to be up there with these brilliant ladies, spreading the word that there is something you can do to help your child with autism.
Time and time again, I hear parents complaining that their local physician or practitioner WANTS to help their child with autism and yet doesn't quite have the tools or training to lead them effectively. Quite honestly, that is what made it necessary for my family to drive to the next state to see Dr. Woeller, the lack of truly qualified people who could help me recover my son. But maybe your physician or practitioner is open to learning more, to expanding their skill set to help treat autism more effectively. If that is the case then this course is perfect for them! I believe that more education for our physicians and practitioners on the treatments that actually work for our kids is crucial at this time. The rates of autism have exploded and there is no one-size-fits-all approach when talking biomedical treatment. Please share! And parents, if you are wanting more education for yourselves, Dr. Woeller is opening this up for parents as well! Below is a message from Dr. Woeller about his new course.

Dr. Kurt Woeller Introduces His Autism Mastery Course

I am very excited about the release of my upcoming Integrative Medicine for Autism Mastery Course for
physicians and other health care practitioners. This is the very first
time I have ever put together such a program. Truth is, I have been
“working on it” for a number of years, trying to encapsulate my 17+
years of clinical practice into a program that could be understood and
implemented in a reasonable time frame. With Autism Mastery, I believe
I’ve done just that. And just in time...as autism rates are growing each
year, and there simply aren’t enough knowledgable health practitioners
to help!

This
online course will feature clinically relevant, practical, and time
efficient material for any health practitioner currently working with
the special needs community, or, for those who want to gain knowledge
about how to help this underserved population of people.

To
help families struggling with the complexities of autism, I have
created an online, 12 week course that will provide a depth of
knowledge regarding biomedical intervention for autism-spectrum
disorders that would normally take years of training and practice to
obtain. In fact, I wish there would have been a course like this when I
was starting as it would have shaved years off my learning curve!

While
Autism Mastery was created with the health care practitioner in mind, I
also know that “autism parents” are some of the most educated and
studious people out there, so we will have spots available for dedicated
parents as well.

My
goal is to increase the knowledge base of anyone who is looking to
implement biomedical intervention into their practices (or homes) and
take their knowledge of integrative health concepts to a deeper level in
helping these children. We need to have more educated and knowledgable
parents and health practitioners helping kids no matter where they are
in the world.

We
have some promotional webinars scheduled in April regarding this
course. I encourage everyone to join me to learn more about my Autism
Mastery Course and how biomedical intervention for autism is so crucial
in fighting this growing epidemic.

If so, then you NEED to be focused on detox. Whether we like it or not, our world has become increasingly toxic. Between the air, water, food supply, chemicals we are exposed to in personal care products, perfumes, lotions, detergents, the list goes on and on.

As Dr. Stephen Genuis presented at the 2014 IMMH conference, the brain is a "target organ" for toxicity. Toxins accumulate in fatty tissue and being the fattest tissue in our body, the brain bears the brunt. And it starts at birth. Science has found over 200 chemical toxins in the cord blood of newborn babies! We can't think of detox as a luxury or just for those over a certain age. In our toxic world, we ALL need to focus on ways that support and enhance our detox capabilities.

Dr. Genuis provided various diseases/conditions that can be theorized as being related to toxicity. Some are:

Diabetes Mellitus II
Autism (hello!)
Infertility
Breast Cancer
Prostate Cancer
Mental Health Disorders

Do you know anyone with those issues? What about headaches, fatigue, brain fog, learning disabilities?

You may be thinking "What's the big deal? We pee and poop out those chemicals!". In a properly functioning system, with certain chemicals, yes. But, do you use antipersperant? Sweating is a really big way to eliminate toxins and as a culture, we seem to be hell bent on preventing sweating! Not many of us can spend time lounging in Far IR Saunas each week either. There is also the issue of some chemicals binding to our feedback mechanism and basically being recycled in the body rather than excreted. Some toxins hide effectively in tissues and can be difficult to determine their levels using the normal testing methods.

The bottom line is that detox is more complicated than it used to be but I have good news! The Thinking Moms Revolution is putting on the "Your Life Detoxified" eConference on March 27th. The conference is just $40 and has a great line up of speakers with critical info on ways to detox and why it is important to YOU and your family today. The speakers include:

Debra Lynn Dadd
Dr. William Shaw
Kara Goyette, ND
Tami Duncan

Don't miss this conference with informative speakers and critical information to support the optimal health of you and your loved ones!
We got the unit on 12/26 and started using it 12/27. I will chronicle our experiences and also collaborate it with an Organic Acids Test that I ran on my son prior to the start of the program (12/22).

Cleanse 1 - WOW! The results for our whole family varied and really fell in line with our own health issues as you will see below.
Within 40 minutes of the first cleanse, he rejoined our family at the dining room table (where we were all sitting) and proactively grabbed a difficult puzzle ball he rec'd for Christmas. Previously he wanted nothing to do with it and would only use it with hand over hand guidance from me. This time he calmly got the ball, sat down and started working on it intently. Later that day he also proactively suggested a game of "eye spy" in the car with his sister, also very atypical behavior. There have been some behavioral indicators of die off as well (irritability, defiance, etc.)
I truly believe our diet is foundational and helps almost every other therapy you are doing with your child when you are feeding them healthy, healing, nutritious foods. You may be thinking "Yeah, that's just great Terri but who has TIME?" Or "Yeah but MY child has so many food allergies that you just don't understand." Or maybe "Who are you kidding, my child eats 3 foods!". Guess what? I've been there, done that. Mealtime battles were a constant for us for many years. We have navigated many food allergies, intolerances and issues like high oxalates which seem to make an already restrictive diet even more restrictive. My son self selected foods, mainly that he was intolerant too (much of what we crave we have issues with). And even "healthy foods" can be harmful to an individual if they have an allergy or intolerance to them. I was about as "Standard American Diet" as one could get. Yep, me, the crazy food lady who even considers whether my children have had too much fruit in one day. I was not always the way I am today.
Feeding your family has become really complicated, time consuming and
expensive. The data is piling up quickly that lots of ingredients in
processed food are making us fat, sick and unhappy. Grocery stores are
full of Genetically Modified food and today’s children are diagnosed
with food allergies and behavioral problems at alarming rates. This is
creating a climate of fear around something that used to be so simple –
feeding your family.

The Thinking Moms’ Revolution has put together an online conference
featuring six dynamic and internationally renowned experts in the areas
of nutrition, children’s health and the science of food to empower us
with education so we can make great food choices for our families. Not
only will this conference tackle the issues of what to avoid, covering
the topics of GMOs and RoundUp in our food, but we will also go in depth
to the sources of the explosion in children’s food allergies and what
happens to children’s growth and development when they eat food they
can’t digest. Getting down to brass tacks, we offer a live cooking
demonstration and some reality-based logistics on budget and time when
cooking for special diets. This eConference will be packed with science
based nutrition information to help you feel confident and calm about
nurturing the people you love with food.
It is with a heavy heart that I write this blog. One of our own, a Thinking Mom, has had her cancer return for the 3rd time. Her son has severe autism. Every parent fears leaving their child but when that child has a disability that is magnified. Please join us in supporting their family in this time of need. We know Melanie has so much faith, love and healing energy behind her and this will surely help as well. Please say a prayer for her and her family now too. And Melanie, aka Booty Kicker, we love you and are here for you!!
Back to school means more planning for healthy and nutritious (but fast) breakfasts. That's where this waffle recipe comes in! It is pretty easy to make, freezes well and reheats well for those busy school mornings.

3 egg yolks, room temperature

3 egg whites, room temperature

1/4 cup coconut milk or water

1/2 cup ground sunflower seeds

1/2 cup ground pumpkin seeds

¼ teaspoon salt

1 teaspoon vanilla

2 tablespoons melted coconut oil

Tallow or coconut oil for waffle iron

Directions:

Preheat waffle iron, I use cast iron so I put it on medium heat as I begin the recipe to ensure it is hot enough. In a medium bowl, whisk egg yolks and milk. Add flour and salt. Combine until smooth. Add melted coconut oil. Add vanilla. Whisk egg whites until they form moist, stiff peaks. Fold about ¼ of egg whites into batter. Fold batter into remaining egg whites in three parts. Scoop 1/2 c. of batter onto a preheated and greased waffle iron depending on your waffle iron size. Close the lid gently! Cook until golden brown. If it sticks, it is not quite done (hard lesson learned). Double and store leftovers in freezer. Enjoy!Terri Burges Hirninghttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16131214762232111105noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-515138895847197893.post-37959715844469037522014-07-12T08:40:00.000-07:002014-07-21T08:46:56.089-07:00Another option for lab test ordering and interpretation from Dr. Kurt WoellerI get asked all the time how to go about getting testing ordered when you either don't have a Dr. willing to order them or you aren't currently working with a Dr. Some Drs. refuse to order tests because they are not familiar with specialized testing options for hard to treat issues like autism, auto-immunity, Hashimoto's, food allergies, etc. And even worse, many will tell you they are a waste of time! Many families like mine know the power of testing when it comes to treating underlying issues of these hard to treat disorders. Below is a guest post from Dr. Kurt Woeller on lab testing options for those who may need it.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Lab tests give us the ability to test our body’s chemistry, and are critical for overall optimal health. There are many benefits to lab testing, yet many people overlook the absolute necessity of this type of internal evaluation.
For example, we can surmise that a person’s hormone levels are low based on an individual’s complaint about how they feel, but obtaining the absolute value is impossible without diagnostic assessment. Lab tests help to determine the exact level of hormones such as estrogen, progesterone and testosterone. Why this is important is when using therapy such as hormone replacement medication. In order to know how much hormone to give, we must know how low the hormone is in the first place, then guide our therapy over time with symptom improvement, along with laboratory data to show whether the hormone levels have become optimal, are still too low, or too high. A particular lab test to help in this process is the Functional Adrenal Stress Profile plus V (five), from BioHealth, available at Lab Tests Plus. This salivary test is an accurate way of determining excess or deficiency of various hormones such as progesterone, estrogen and testosterone. Also, evaluated from the #205 panel is adrenal function through cortisol measurement. Adrenal exhaustion is a common pattern with many people and affects energy levels, mood, sleep, and immunity. Without knowing exactly what your particular values are the implementation of specific hormone and adrenal therapy is just a guessing game.
Another example of the importance of lab testing is for chronic infections. Often people suffer from chronic digestive complaints such as bloating, gas, pain, diarrhea or constipation. These types of complaints can persist for months and years and many times individuals try various supplements and medications to no avail. Stool pathogen testing can be very important to rule out an infection in the digestive system that is compromising health. The #401-H Gastrointestinal Pathogen Screen from BioHealth is an excellent stool test to look for chronic infections such as parasites, bacteria, and yeast. Without the data from a stool test many people suffer needlessly when their issue could be resolved quickly through appropriate treatment of an intestinal parasite.
It cannot be overstated that the role of lab testing in health assessment is critical. Only treating of symptoms wastes valuable time and can cost hundreds or thousands of dollars. Laboratory testing is able to identify problems and allow for more appropriate intervention, ultimately saving time and money.
Lab Tests Plus is a specialized lab ordering service for health education and information. If you have questions about lab testing or which lab test may be most appropriate for your situation, you can post your questions through the “Which Test” section of www.labtestsplus.com.
I also know the power of great customer service and the power of word of mouth when you get bad customer service. I don't want to just focus on the negative so I do have a good story to share as well. Here goes.....
We decide to make a quick trip to the store for our 4th of July celebrations tomorrow. We all jump in the car and the dog goes outside (it was raining so of course he was next to me as I worked at my desk this afternoon). We live on acres and he RUNS. He greets cars, runs along them as they enter and leave our property, it is his thing. I don't know why he does it, he just does. People think they are going to hit him all the time. But, he always seems to know the limits of the car, of himself, it is slightly odd really, a little Jedi-esque. He also knows what to do when we back up to leave. He always gets out of the way. Always. Except today. The unimaginable happened. As my husband made frantic calls to Kaibab Vet to make sure they were still open, it is a Thursday evening before a holiday after all, I cried and tended to our dog. No bones seemed broken. I administered Arnica in pellet form. We verified Kaibab Vet was open and would be for 2 more hours. We put him in the car and rushed there.
After getting us seen immediately Kaibab Vet went right to work with IV fluids, pain meds and xrays. It was determined he has lung contusions. He needs an oxygen cage for the best chance at recovery. OK, so where do we find one in Flagstaff?? Well there is only one vet hospital that has that, Canyon Pet Hospital, literally across the street from where we are. Yes, this would be a downside to small town living. OK I say, let's get them on the phone and get me prices. I need to know what to expect. The vet looks at me and says "OK....I will call them" she knows something she is not telling me. She calls, they refuse to quote her. They say I need to transport my now stable animal across the street for THEM to do the same assessment Kaibab Vet has already done? Why would Canyon Pet Hospital need to do another assessment when he has already been assessed and has minutes old xrays? The vet at Kaibab Vet tells me that they held off on one additional xray in case we do want to transport him to Canyon Pet Hospital. Why? Well because in the past when Kaibab Vet has sent patients to Canyon Pet Hospital they have required patients to do another one even though they already did one. Hmmmm......shadiness abounds.
So they won't tell a vet at Kaibab Vet Clinic pricing, I kind of get that. So I call. No dice. I get a little "Shawty" on them. Yeah, that's right. I just friggin hit my own dog and you won't tell me what it will cost to put him in your nifty oxygen crate??? Canyon Pet Hospital "No maam we need to assess him first". "He's BEEN ASSESSED AND IS STABLE NOW, I know what he needs, you can't tell me how much that will cost me?". Canyon Pet Hospital "No we cannot quote price until we assess him". "Ah so let me get this straight, you want to charge me for something I have already paid for to get the same info Kaibab Vet can tell you right now, you want me to move my now-stable dog to your facility to have you tell me that what I need is too expensive and then I have the tough decision of deciding whether to do it or not, that is SHADY business practices right there!". Canyon Pet Hospital "Let me get our nurse on the line to see if she can get you a price". Then I sit on hold with Canyon Pet Hospital for about 5 minutes when I say "F this" and hang up. When I vent my frustration to the vet at Kaibab Vet all she can say is "That is a very common thing we hear and often we send an animal over with a catheter and tell them we just put it in, they will take it out and put in a new one". I get it, every vet is different and they have their own style but seriously? That seems shady, sheisty and just plain bad business Canyon Pet Hospital!!!!!!
So where is my dog?? He is at Kaibab Vet where they are improvising for us. Then we have been able to secure oxygen for tomorrow and I will be making my OWN oxygen crate for him and will monitor him myself. By the time we left him, about 3 hours after we got there, I gave him another dose of Arnica, he was on oxygen the whole time with a dedicated, caring vet tech and we have a plan for the night/morning. He was already looking better, gums were looking better and tongue less purple. He even tried to stand up at one point and turned his head when he heard me talking in the hall. We all gave him tons of pets, hugs and kisses the whole time we were there. I have no doubt that Kaibab Vet Clinic will take wonderful care of our Rudy. And as for Canyon Pet Hospital I say animal owner beware. As an animal parent in distress this afternoon they did NOTHING to provide any help during a very stressful time. So yeah, Canyon Pet Hospital receptionist, I was the one who unleashed on you this afternoon. I am sure you will find as many people giving them rave reviews, I however will not be. Nor will I EVER take any of my (many and varied) animals to them.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Update: At 6:30 am on July 4th Kaibab Vet Dr. Penrod called to tell us the sad news that Rudy passed earlier that morning. We are all heartbroken at the loss of our dear friend. We miss his doggie smile as he greeted us at our gate, seeing him each morning right outside our bedroom door, sleeping next to one of the kids in their room, laying next to me as I worked, seeing him running after crows and squirrels, etc. He was a true companion who without fail would get up and follow me wherever I went. I wish we could have just one more day with him to show him how much he meant to our family. Rest in peace sweet Rudy, you have changed our hearts and souls forever. We love you!Terri Burges Hirninghttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16131214762232111105noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-515138895847197893.post-80895474418629543592014-05-15T17:24:00.002-07:002014-05-15T17:24:45.386-07:00Evolution of a Revolution: From Hope to Healing: How Thinking Parents are Recovering their Children and Uncovering the Truth The day has come, our book has been published!! I cannot quite describe the pride I feel knowing MY son's journey has been documented. It lays among the other stories of brave, fearless, passionate, driven and loving mothers recovering their children too, healing the new "normal" of chronically ill children. Wow. And we always knew it would be an eBook but thanks once again to this same amazing group of women, it will be published in hard copy very soon as well. As of today, it is available on Kindle. Each purchase helps other families! This is why I did this, so others can get grants to fund the real treatments that help our children. Many are very expensive and families often cannot bear the brunt of those costs. ALL proceeds go to this grant program.

So please consider purchasing a copy for someone you know who needs some encouragement that autism recovery is real. The link to the Kindle version is below, Nook and hard copy coming soon.
This video gives HOPE to other families that autism treatment and recovery is possible. My son, and many, many other children are proof. And yet we all know how expensive treatments are. That is why I am so proud to be involved with Team TMR which is a non profit specifically created to help families fund autism treatments. Our eBook will be coming out soon which will feature my son's story of his journey in and out of autism as we figured out what his biomedical challenges were. All proceeds of our eBook will benefit others helping to recover their children as well. Team TMR is something I am so thrilled to be a part of, it has taken my own personal drive to help others to another level and has grown into something (already) that I never could have imagined. This is a dedicated group of warrior moms and we are hell bent on changing this world for YOUR child as much as for our own!! So please encourage others to share the message that Team TMR has and if they are inclined, donate to this non profit. And let me know if you spot my little cutie and our family in the video.
I am honored to be among these women and included in their next ebook that is currently in the works! You will get to read stories of hope, recovery and perseverance from some really kick ass moms! But in the meantime, I was asked to write a guest blog so click HERE, go read it and leave me a comment! Please share with others as we all need to support one another and starting with ourselves is the first step! I know it can be hard as a mom in general and especially with special needs children, but it is imperative. Ok, enough giving it away, get on over there, read it and give me some feedback. Oh and Namaste! ;)
